The Imitation of Life

   image

The Imitation of Life revolves around life in the 1950s. The film touches on major themes of the 1950s, such as gender roles and racism. More specifically, the film shows a piece of what women’s roles were in the 1950s. As a result of World War 2, women had to become more involved in the workplace. As the film shows, some women continued being forces in the workplace during the 1950s. This movie proves that not all women in the 1950s were trying to be the “perfect housewife”. Lora Meredith is seen as a very career oriented actress. Throughout the film, Lora places a priority on her career. This example shows the presence that women had in the workplace. The increase of women in the workplace continues when Susie chooses to go to college. This shows that Susie wants to improve her employment opportunities. The film also exhibits some negative aspects of the 1950s.

The Imitation of Life contains many examples of racism the 1950s. In the film, it is clear that African Americans have inferior jobs. Annie Johnson’s job is to take care of Lora and Susie. As the maid/nanny, she has a job that reflects how poorly people view African Americans. In addition, it seems as if Lora has hired an African American man to be a server during a party. The movie clearly shows that African Americans have jobs serving white people. However, it is important to note that the African Americans in the movie know about the racism present. For example, a big storyline in the film is Sarah Jane’s struggle with her race. Throughout the movie, Sarah Jane is ashamed of the fact that she is black. Sarah Jane constantly hides behind her light skin and wants to identify as a white girl. She notices that being white creates better opportunities for her. She feels the effects of being black when her boyfriend attacks her. The boyfriend is embarrassed that he is dating a black girl. The movie really shows the racism present during the 1950s.
